Rockin' with Walter

My Dad is an old rocker. He used to play the guitar in his band. He played in a really cool band called Smoke Striker. They played in colourful smoke.

Walter came to our MLE to show us his hobby. His hobby was his guitar. He taught us a, b, c, d, e and f. He played some music when we were tidying up.

Look what we did in Discovery today...

Leon found this skeleton in his garden and his mum glued it together. We really enjoyed looking closely at it to see what the different parts were. Can you guess what it is?

Painting water pictures on the courtyard.
Having fun with water.
Exploring the science table.
Making talking animals.

Using the new shape punchers to make cards and pictures.
Ice cream made out of playdough.
Using the boxes to make a suitcase to go camping with.
On Wednesday Darryn came and shared his hobbies. One of his hobbies is car racing. He has a special helmet that has a neck protector. He also has a special suit that is fireproof because if an accident happens then you don't get hurt but you need to get some pj's or some boxes on underneath it.
By Poppy

Darryn Henderson's hobbies are motor-cross and sometimes car racing but mostly motor-cross. He does downhill biking too. He showed us some of his helmets. He tried on his car racing helmet for us. When you try a helmet on your cheeks look all squished. He has a special fireproof suit but you have to wear pj's or undies under it. He has so many medals and trophies but he said it's not all about trophies and medals.

What is a hobby?

Hobbies are fun. Some peoples hobbies are sports. Everyone can have hobbies even adults can. You can have hobbies in a group or by yourself.
By Barnaby

Hobbies are things you like doing. You do hobbies when you have spare time. Everyone can have a different hobby so if someone likes shopping and you don't, and you like going to the park instead, that is okay.
By Melissa

Hobbies are things that you love doing and make your life awesome! Hobbies are basically for everyone because big people are great at hobbies. Babies don't have hobbies. You do hobbies in your spare time, after work, after school and after an event.

A moment in time.....

I heard gigantic claws smashing old Room 10 and windows crumbling to pieces.

I saw piles of wood getting picked up and dropped like they don't even care about it any more.

I felt like there was a dinosaur standing next to me smashing everything.

I wondered where all of the wood would go.

What if we had no power for a day......

Today there is a power cut. Everyone has to work without electricity. No one can play with the computer. Everyone can’t have toast.
By Theo.

Today on news headlines there was a gigantic power cut in Christchurch at 1am in the morning. There was a storm in Christchurch and  the power lines got hammered! We have no electricity until tomorrow. This means we can’t message, do work or play Clash of the Clans!
By Jackson

Today there was no electricity in the world. There was a power cut. The toaster wouldn’t go on. I couldn’t play on the iPad because it was flat. It was funny because mum washed me because there was no hot water.
By Summer

Today there was a power cut. Everyone didn’t get up . The toasters wouldn’t go. I had weetbix. Everyone was late. Everyone couldn’t use the computer.

How to keep safe around electricity

In Room 10 this week we have been thinking about how to be safe around electricity. If you are not careful with electricity you could get hurt or start a fire. Here are some ideas for how to keep safe:

You can’t cook in the kitchen without an adult.
Never put water near a TV or a computer or you could get an electric shock if it spills.
Don’t make the toaster jam or if you put something in it you might get an electric shock.
By Patrick

Never put water beside a TV or a computer because you can get an electric shock. Never put a hair dryer in water because you can get an electric shock. Only use a microwave if an adult is with you. Don’t cook something unless a grown up is with you.
Barnaby

Don’t put a sock on a light.
Liam

Never put water near electricity. They do not mix together. Do not let babies chew on wire. Never cook stuff when there is no grown up with you. Do not put metal things in the toaster.
Melissa

Electricity is very dangerous with water that’s spilt on the table. Do not have cables on the floor because a baby could bite it and get harmed. When you are in the kitchen you have to have an adult with you.

Spring Poems

Spring
Butterflies swooping in the air.
Blossoms growing in the branches.
Grass growing up out of the ground.
The sun is very hot like lava.
The leaves are very green when it is spring.

By Will

Spring
Rocks dazzling in the sunlight.
Blossoms bursting like a pearl that is freshly made.
Baby animals are born in spring.
Grass dancing through the wild wind.
By Annabel

Spring
Grass swaying in the strong stormy wind.
Daffodils dancing in the fireworks and talking to their friends.
Bees buzzing in the hot sun.
Branches swishing in the beautiful warm day
By Poppy.

Spring
Lambs frolicking around a paddock on their wobbly legs.
Grass that is so green that daisies are sprouting.
Trees are getting dressed from winter midnights and days.
Foals are galloping trying to go on the racecourse and horses are racing.
Daffodils are staring at the bright, bright sun.
Green leaves are sprouting like mad.

Science Alive Visit

Today the people from Science Alive visited us in our Learning Centre.  We had lots of fun making circuits, working with static electricity and working out what materials electricity can go through.  Astrid brought her robot Rosie along to meet us.  She was very cute and also helped us learn what we use electricity for: Heat, Light, Movement and Sound. Can you work out what we are doing in each of these photos?
