Measuring

Last week, in awesome Room 10, we were learning all about measurement. We all got an enormous piece of paper. We found a buddy. My buddy was Matthew. We all had to draw around each other by taking turns.First I drew around Matthew then he drew around me. We measured each other with pink rods. The next day we measured our ankles and wrists.  We learnt what parts of our bodies are longer than other parts of our body. My ankle was longer than my wrist.

For our maths topic we were learning about measurement. We figured out that our hands were smaller than our feet. Next we tied a piece of string around our head and then a piece of string around our ankle.  The piece of string around our head was bigger than the piece of string around our ankle. We also measured how tall we were. We learnt when you measure two different things, the things that you use to measure need to be the same size.

We used string to measure how tall we are.
We compared our heights using the string.

We checked to see if the length of our hand was longer than our foot.

We discovered lots of measuring words:

Guess how many sticks are in the jar

In class we have been estimating how many objects are in the jar. Then we have been checking how close our guess was.

Can you guess how many sticks are in the jar. We are going to check on Monday and we will let you know how many there are. We will add your guess to our number line.

Symmetrical Butterflies

Today in Discovery we made symmetrical butterflies. To make them you need to only paint on one side of the butterfly. Then you fold it in half. When you unfold it, it looks like a butterfly.

Today we came back from PE and found that pirates had been in our classroom! They had left us all different coloured pieces of treasure. They were hidden around the classroom and it was a mystery to find them. Once we found the treasure we stuck them on a graph and then we could see how much everyone had.
By Charlotte

"The pink group had 17 pieces of treasure", said Charlotte.
"The swords were the most", said Tainui.
"There is only one coin", said Summer.

"This had the most maps and only one crown", said Eddie

Making Pictographs

In maths we are learning how to group and display different things. Today we grouped the class in different ways and displayed our findings using a pictograph.  We are learning to write comments about our graphs. Can you look at our graphs and write a comment about what you see.
